Essentially... several months ago--maybe a year, at this point--Nahida was not actually in charge of Sumeru. Most of us had no idea, but it turns out that the Sages had locked her away. They'd wanted to build their own god, one that they thought they could control, I assume. [Truly the only reason he knows these things is because he got the rundown from Cyno and the others after, and because he saw Nahida's memories.]
They succeeded in creating him... but Nahida was able to defeat him with the power of dreams. Now, obviously she doesn't have her divinity here, and your world doesn't have elemental energy like ours does... but I've been trying to work with her to come up with something that would work in your world, even temporarily.
[He's not so delusional that he thinks they'll be able to cobble together a magic Knives-defeating box with what they have here. But sending thw three of them home with something that might give them an edge, something he'd have no way of planning for--maybe it'll make a difference. He has to believe that, because he can't stand the idea of them getting out of here just to walk back into desolation and death.]
... Knives is just a guy now, but it might help if we give this to Wolfwood or Livio. They're in, relative to me, in the past where my brother is still a large threat.
[ They have talked about not changing the past, but... Maybe this? Would be good? ]
This means that my brother would still have his powers, trapped for an indefinite time... [ And Vash goes quiet becase there's a moment of weakness—Knives is still his brother. Despite everything, they are brothers.
But. Rights revoked, I guess. He seems resolved and resigned, quickly at that. ] But many lives would be saved.
I was planning to make copies for each of you, just in case. [HE'S NOT TAKING ANY CHANCES.
His gaze softens, though, and he reaches out to put his hand on Vash's.]
I don't think it would be permanent, to be honest. [Even if it does work. Maybe it would be better if it was, but...] But... hopefully it would be enough to ensure you could do what you needed to do.
[Find a better way, or even just evacuate people somehow--he doesn't know. He's learned so much about Vash and his world, about their situation, but he's aware there's a thousand things he doesn't know, still.]
