It's alright, it's not a secret. [Just, like, depressing.] My father died about twenty years ago, in the desert. As a child, I thought that if anyone could fix things, it would be a god... or maybe it would be better to say I'd wanted to believe that. But of course that was impossible.

A few other things happened over the years, and... well, I just learned to put my faith in other people instead. But it's not out of any lack of respect for Nahida--it's just that gods work in different ways than we do, I think. When you're drowning, you learn to reach toward an outstretched hand, not to the sky.

I agree. I've been very fortunate. [Which is proof enough, for him, that there really will always be people who will support each other, no matter what.] I'm hardly selfless, but I don't think you have to be to know that mutual assistance is the purpose of society.

Someone has to balance out people like him and Alhaitham. But from the way he spoke, I don't think his views are as removed from ours as they might seem.

Humans are social creatures and I believe everyone has the potential to be good, just as much as bad. If not more so.
